1. What is the weather like on Olkhon Island? When is the best time to visit Lake Baikal?

Lake Baikal has a sharply continental climate — warm days and cool nights. Here is a month-by-month breakdown:

June — variable weather. Daytime average +21°C, nights +12°C. Fewer tourists, lower prices, nature at its freshest. A great choice if you prefer a quieter trip.

August — the most comfortable time. Daytime +24°C, nights +15°C. Lake water reaches its warmest temperature. Most of our travelers choose August for their first visit.

September — quiet season. Daytime up to +20°C, very few tourists, stunning golden landscapes. Perfect for those who value peace and solitude.

Important: Olkhon Island has its own microclimate — it gets three times more sunny days than Irkutsk. Don't rely on the Irkutsk weather forecast when planning your trip.

3. Are there ATMs and internet on Olkhon Island?

ATMs: there are no ATMs on Olkhon Island. Be sure to withdraw cash in Irkutsk before departure. Some shops and cafes accept card payments, but it is always better to have cash on hand.

Mobile signal and internet: all major Russian networks operate on the island — MTS, Megafon, Tele2, Beeline. 3G internet is available only in the village of Khuzhir. Outside the village, the signal is unstable. Many of our travelers consider this a welcome digital detox — one of the unexpected highlights of the trip.

4. Are there shops on the island? What can I buy?

Yes, the village of Khuzhir has a large supermarket with a good range of food and essentials, plus many smaller shops. Card payments are accepted in most of them.

Souvenirs and gifts: Khuzhir has many souvenir shops — magnets, wooden crafts, jewelry made from Baikal stones. We will take you to the largest souvenir store on the island as part of your tour program.

Fish and local delicacies: we recommend buying omul and grayling fish at Irkutsk central market after the tour — better selection and fresher quality.

Cape Khoboy — the northernmost point of the island. From here you can see the widest stretch of Lake Baikal. On a clear day, the Holy Nose Peninsula is visible 80 km away.

Saraisky Beach — a 3 km sandy beach, the most popular swimming spot on the island. Water temperature reaches +18–23°C in August.

Khuzhir Local History Museum — over 5,000 unique exhibits about the history of the island and Lake Baikal.

7. What is the Circum-Baikal Railway (CBZD)?

The Circum-Baikal Railway is one of the most scenic rail routes in Russia — 89 km along the southern shore of Lake Baikal, with 39 tunnels and more than 400 bridges and viaducts. Built in the early 20th century as part of the Trans-Siberian Railway, it is today a monument of engineering heritage and a beloved tourist attraction.
